ZINC, an essential trace mineral, is a hot topic in the health & wellness industry lately, particularly in part due to our current pandemic crisis. Why is this? Zinc, with its numerous health benefits, is crucial for optimum immune function. Here’s a little summary I wrote up on some of it. Let me know what you think!
Along with its role in the functioning of enzymes that aid in digestion and metabolism, it is an essential nutrient for cell growth and protein production.
It is also vital for the immune system, boosting the activity of natural killer & T-cells, and helping to decrease oxidative stress and inflammation.
Zinc is also a crucial nutrient in supporting your sense of taste & smell. Pretty good to know right??
A few of the food sources high in Zinc are oysters, red meat, poultry, and some nuts such as pine nuts and cashews.
A few things to note:
Zinc is a mineral that you want to be careful to not over consume as too much can cause copper defienencies. Also, best not to take at the same time you take your magnesium as they may fight for binding sites. Another tip, Vitamin C helps with absorption.
As always, checking your nutrient levels, along with supplementing, is best done under supervision of a physician.
