How's Your Sleep Quality?

Updated: Oct 31, 2022

Sleep is your body’s time to restore itself. Optimal sleep is crucial for your health, with many benefits including: improving brain function, regulating hormones, stimulating cell & tissue repair, and supporting a healthy responsive immune system.

Prioritizing sleep can be an easy and free way to take care of your health, however many struggle with getting good quality sleep. What can you do to improve your sleep quality? Here are some simple tips:

Keep a sleep/wake cycle routine by training your body to wake and sleep at the same times every day. Try to set a scheduled time that you wind down for bed and time you wake everyday that you can keep consistent. This will help train your circadian rhythm.

Limit screen exposure at night. The blue light from the screens tricks the brain into thinking it’s wake time. Try setting a time an hour or two (minimum) before bed where you get off of your devices.

Get early morning light exposure. This is going to help train your circadian rhythm. Along with the immediate energy boost you can get from sunlight, the light exposure you get during the day will increase serotonin which will later be converted into melatonin. Getting this rhythm dialed down, will effect your sleepiness when it gets dark.

Incorporate Strength Training into your exercises program. Studies have shown strength training can have an impact on improving deep sleep.

Meditate and practice breathing exercises. Both have a calming effect on the nervous system. Great to practice right before bed.
